$200 MILLION?! The INSANE Budget Behind MultiVersus!

Alright y’all, we gotta talk about this because this is just wild. Warner Bros. spent $200 million on MultiVersus. TWO. HUNDRED. MILLION. And now, the game is shutting down again in May—leaving them with a $100 million deficit.

How?! Like, seriously, where did all that money go? MultiVersus isn’t some ultra-realistic, next-gen, open-world masterpiece. It’s a Smash Bros.-style game with cartoony graphics, and yet, somehow, they managed to burn through hundreds of millions of dollars. I just don’t get it.

Breaking Down the Madness

According to reports, Warner Bros. Games took a massive financial hit in November, and MultiVersus was a huge part of that loss. Now, I play MultiVersus. My son loves it. The game itself is fun, and it’s got a strong character roster—Batman, Superman, Shaggy, Bugs Bunny. They have the icons to make it work. But somewhere along the way, something went terribly wrong.

You have to wonder… how many teams worked on this? Did they outsource it to multiple studios? Were there just too many cooks in the kitchen? Because there’s no way a game like this should cost $200 million to make. This isn't a massive open-world RPG with motion-captured cinematics and a decade of development. It’s a fighting game.

And now that the shutdown is happening in May, what’s next? Layoffs. We’ve seen it time and time again—whenever a big-budget game flops or gets shut down, developers lose their jobs. That’s the real tragedy here. Warner Bros. will survive, but what about all the talented devs who worked on this?

The Bigger Picture in Gaming

This whole situation makes me think about the ridiculous budgets in gaming right now. If MultiVersus cost this much, can you imagine what games like God of War: Ragnarok or Spider-Man 2 must have cost? $300 million? More? It’s unsustainable.

And this is why we’re seeing big companies like Microsoft putting their first-party titles on PlayStation and Nintendo—because they need to make their money back. Development costs are spiraling out of control, and these companies are scrambling to figure out how to stay profitable.

So what happens next? Do we start seeing more studios shut down? More layoffs? Or do these companies finally start managing their budgets better instead of throwing hundreds of millions at projects that don’t need it?

What Do Y’all Think?

I’d love to hear from you. Does this situation make sense to you? Do you think game budgets are out of control? Or is there something we’re missing here?
